BOOK OF THE WEEK

This week, the Junior Librarian Florence (from Owl class) shares with us a favourite read.

Florence recommends Rhinocorn Rules written and illustrated by Matt Carr.

Florence explains her choice: “This is a magical story about the power of colours and the importance of friendship.”

Ron looks the same as all the other rhinos, but he’s different. He doesn’t enjoy following the antisocial, grumpy rules that all other rhinos seem to stick to very naturally. Instead, Ron loves laughter and bright colours and feels full of joy. Life isn’t much fun for Ron – until he finds a way to show everyone his true colours and embrace his inner ‘Rhinocorn’. The only trouble is the other rhinos are NOT happy about Ron’s transformation and how he’s broken all their rules …

Mrs Harvey supports Florence’s inspired choice. This is a joyful book about being yourself, being creative, thinking outside the box, being a bit of a rebel if that’s what you want to do – and ripping up the rule book! It offers a clear message about being an individual and being proud of yourself. A positive message for everyone to share.

Matt Carr’s illustrations bring the whole story to life in a glorious way, chronicling Ron’s journey from grey and dull, to a vibrant David Bowie style Rhinocorn. This funny story with a lovely message about being yourself is great fun and easy to read out loud. Older children can turn to the fascinating rhino facts at the end.

We have several books written by Matt Carr in our library collection. Matt Carr is an author, illustrator and graphic designer whose debut picture book, Superbat, was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2018. Superbat and Matt’s second picture book, Spyder, have published to international acclaim. He was Cheltenham Festivals (Children’s) Illustrator in Residence 2018. His latest book Rocketmole launched in April 2019. We have all of these books in our Grimsdell library.

Happy Reading
