On a cold and crisp morning at Grasshoppers Rugby Club in Ealing, Mill Hill School’s U16’s played against six other schools for the Middlesex Rugby Cup. Captained by Harry (Fifth Form, Priestley), Mill Hill School defeated Gunnersbury Catholic School 8-0 in their first match, with an excellent kicking display from fly-half Matthew (Fifth Form, Priestley).
The second match saw a close contest against Hampton School, with Mill Hill School defending exceptionally well with big tackles on their goal line before sealing victory with a last-second, try under the posts from Charlie (Lower Sixth, McClure). The third match was played against familiar rival University College School Hampstead London, the first start for U15 fly-half Alex (Fifth Form, Cedars), who controlled the game well, leading to a comfortable 19-5 win.
The fourth match versus St Benedict’s School was a fiercely contested battle, with both teams challenging the breakdown well. Mill Hill School struck first with a decisive score in the corner from Guy (Fifth Form, Murray), the conversion dropping narrowly under the crossbar. St Benedict’s scored second with a fine try in the corner which was converted, Mill Hill fought back and dominated the rest of the possession. However, St Benedict’s defended well and kept Mill Hill at bay, winning the game 5-7. The fifth match against Turing School saw Mill Hill run in multiple tries; Louis (Fifth Form, Priestley) and Saugat (Fifth Form, School) showed outstanding footwork and speed in the wide channels for a 35-0 win, the final match against London Oratory School starting was a cagy affair. However, Mill Hill School quickly took control with a strong running game led by prop Harry (Fifth Form, Priestley) with tries scored through the middle and out wide, Mill Hill finished off the tournament with a 28-7 victory.
Mill Hill School won the Cup with the most wins and points on the day, an excellent performance to cap off a successful season for the U16s. Thank you to Middlesex for organising the day, Grasshoppers Rugby Club for hosting and Miss Pritchard for physio support.
