This week in Year 1…

This week has been Anti-bullying and Odd Socks week. Children and teachers came into school wearing odd socks to celebrate the uniqueness in all of us. The children took part in lots of activities throughout the week to demonstrate what it means to be bullied and how it feels to be a bully and with the various activities, children learnt ways of preventing and responding to bullying.

This week in Literacy, the children have been reading the text To Market! To Market! By Anushka Ravishankar and Emanuele Scanziani. The book has wonderful illustrations of a little girl visiting her local Indian market and exploring all the different stalls. This text inspired the children to learn about verbs and how they are used in the text. The children chose a picture from the book identified the action using verbs and then used them to create sentences.

In Phonics, this week the children have been learning the common constant ‘cl’ as in clock, clap, cloud and clip, ‘cr’ as in crack, cross and crib, ‘fl’ for flap, flash, flag and finally ‘nk’ as in sink, bank and think. The children recapped ‘or’ and ‘oo’ digraphs.

This week in Maths, the children have continued to reinforce ‘think 5’ and by using this strategy to add 5 and some more in problem solving.  They also used their counting on strategy to show that counting on from a bigger number is easier. The children played the counting on game in pairs to reinforce their learning.

In Science, the children have continued to learn to classify animals, this time they classified different animals into herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores and learnt how the structures of animal teeth are adapted to eat different foods. They recorded their findings on a Venn diagram by classifying the animals into different categories.

In Geography, the children looked at a world map, located India and learnt the continent to which it belongs. They then explored the map to locate, name and identify the other continents and the surrounding oceans.
