Old Millhillian Tim Phillips Visit Mill Hill

We were delighted to host Old Millhillian Tim Phillips (Winterstoke 1954-1960) to unveil his portrait in the recently refurbished Old Millhillian’s room during the annual Senior Tim Phillips invitational singles week.

Tim not only enjoyed a short tour of our glorious grounds but also took the time to interact with our Senior Boys and Girls Tennis captains and players, watching their exhibition tennis matches. He shared fond memories of his time as a pupil, noting that the courts remain in the same location and expressing relief that the rather difficult Mill Hill-invented game of one-handed hockey had ceased play!

Parents were also able to join the event for strawberries and Pimm’s whilst pupils enjoyed a relaxed Q&A with the former All English Lawn Tennis Club President. Tim’s invaluable advice to pupils was ‘Keep playing Tennis – it’s a sport you can pick up and play anywhere around the world, regardless of age, level, ability’ and his most memorable moment from his time at Mill Hill? ‘Playing on Court 1 in the inter-house Tennis as a spotty 12-year-old and beating the older Tennis Captain!’
