- Meet Mr Halkett
We sat down with Mr Rhett Halkett, Head of Hockey at Mill Hill, to learn more about him and his role leading hockey at the school.
Tell us a bit about yourself.
I am an ex-professional international hockey player that represented South Africa for over 10 years. I was both vice-captain and captain of the team at various stages throughout my playing career. I have attended three Olympic games with various teams in different capacities.
Aside from teaching and education, what other things are you passionate about?
My family and exploring new places. I play a variety of different sports but enjoy spending my spare time on a golf course, running in the mountains or in the ocean surfing.
What was your favourite subject at school?
English.
What made you decide to become a teacher?
I did not. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time when coaching opportunities become available after I retired from playing international hockey.
Could you share an inspirational quote with us? How does it inspire you?
"Stay away from negative people, they have a problem for every solution."
It inspires me to be curious over judgmental but to also be critical to which people and events I invest my energy into to.
What advice would you give to our pupils to ensure that they get the most out of their time at Mill Hill?
Embrace the opportunities and support that surround you.
What excites you the most about your new role?
The opportunity to help pupils reach and exceed their perceived personal potential.
What do you want to achieve as the Head of your sport?
I hope to achieve a clear pathway for hockey player development not only within Mill Hill School but beyond through club hockey, Talent Academy opportunities and ultimately the dream of representing your country at international level.
