  • Mill Hill School Welcome England Golf Coach of the Year 2024, John Watson
March 14, 2025

“Why guess when you can measure?”

These were the wise words spoken by John Watson, England Golf Coach of the Year, England Girls’ National Coach and Advanced PGA Professional, inside the Mill Hill Golf Simulator building on Wednesday 12 March 2025.

Driven from Golf Biodynamics and Trackman, it was all measuring and no guessing when it came to what part of a golf swing needs adjusting. With access to two of the most respected products on the market, and the biodynamics kit only being used by a handful of coaches in the UK, this was an incredible opportunity for Mill Hill School golf players.

It looked, and sounded, a little like this:

A monotone drone hums in the background, correcting a pupil, wired up from golf club to head, into the best position for his shot. With sensors behind and to his right, and a camera facing him, his every move is being watched and monitored by John, and Mr Dean Halford, Director of Golf at Mill Hill School and Advanced PGA Professional.

Taking his shot, the ball slams into the projector screen and the trajectory is measured through a ball tracker on a generated course. Numbers appear along the bottom; a selection of data that John and Dean will analyse to get the best from the young player.

Speaking about golf at Mill Hill, John Watson commented: “I think it’s a fantastic opportunity. For this kind of environment to be out there for students is fabulous. It’s not something you see a lot of.”

With the golf season arriving soon, opportunities such as the one provided with the visit of John Watson will prove to be invaluable.

Mr Dean Halford said: “This has been such an experience for our pupils. Over three days, 18 pupils had access to sessions that are normally only open to elite, professional athletes. It has been a worthy initiative and it’s been a great way to prepare our golfers.

Having John come in and providing additional wisdom as a European Girls’ Championship gold medallist has been brilliant and I look forward to welcoming him back again in the future.”

Many pupils at Mill Hill have already earned international acclaim and/or clinched victories in national school golf competitions. The golf programme at the School blends instruction with hands-on experience, with pupils also having the privilege of playing at premier golf courses in North London.

Mill Hill School leads the way in promoting health and wellbeing to their pupils using the power of golf, and exposure to such elite equipment and guidance will only raise awareness of an already impressive golf academy at the School.
