- Academic Roundup: Spring Term

An academic roundup of Spring Term.
It has been another epic term for the academic programmes at Mill Hill School. Amidst a wealth of incredible activities and achievements here are just a few of the highlights:
Intermediate Maths Challenge
This term was the turn of Lower School to take part in the Intermediate Maths Challenge. In total, 12 pupils achieved a Gold award and 80 achieved a certificate of some colour (Bronze, Silver or Gold).
Particular congratulations go to Henry M who achieved the Best in the School and Arnav P and Ethan C who achieved Best in their respective year-groups. We also wish Henry, Arnav, Ben C, Kotaro K and Sophie H the very best of luck as they await the results of the Kangaroo follow-on round and Louis S as he awaits his results in the Maclaurin Olympiad.
Beyond the UKMT, our Lower School Maths scholars were treated to an online Careers Panel, with working professionals discussing how Maths relates to their day-to-day work. Covering Careers as wide-ranging as programming AI, Insurance underwriting, Logistics and Space, pupils were treated to a great insight in where Maths could take them in the future. Finally, the Further Mathematicians experienced a great day out at 'Maths in Action', a lecture series in London designed to explore A Level Maths beyond the curriculum. With talks on fluid dynamics in waves, risk and even one from Dr Tom Crawford on the Millennium Problems to name but a few, it was an enriching day for all participants and helped continue to inspire the next generation of Mill Hill mathematicians.

Geography pupils launch a Coral Reef
Last year’s Summer Enrichment week saw Geographers learning about coral reef conservation and undertaking a VR dive around a reef in the Indian Ocean that we are seeking to protect.
Pupils from Fourth Form, Remove and Lower Sixth worked collaboratively to design structures that could be used to grow the reef around Koh Tao as part of Thailand’s coral restoration project.
This term, the chosen structure was built and in the next month or two it will be sunk off Koh Tao with coral frags attached and we will in the future be able to follow dive footage to see the reef grow around our structure. It is a Sea bunny - Jorunna parva (a species of dorid nudibranch).
It will be amazing and a real legacy for the school to have designed and planted part of the reef and we hope to follow its growth and development, and even undertake a partnership trip in the near future to dive and visit the project!
While we await this exciting initiative, this term we are delighted to have launched the Enrichment Week 2025 – who knows what amazing achievements our pupils will enjoy this June?
Science Week
Every Spring, the Science department celebrate British Science Week. Although it was incredibly busy with all hands-on deck, it proved yet again to be a fantastic event. Over the week we had the pleasure of welcoming four prep schools Belmont, Keble, Lyonsdown and St Paul’s and worked with our youngest pupils in Grimsdell creating a vibrant and energetic laboratory, rich with exciting experiments.
Pupils from Remove and the Sixth Form expertly led the sessions, engaging the younger pupils with a variety of jaw-dropping experiments. Their enthusiasm and dedication truly made the activities enjoyable and educational for everyone involved.
One of the highlights of the week was our special day dedicated to Women in Science. On this day, we again collaborated with Belmont Year 6 pupils to explore the significant contributions of women in various scientific fields. It was an inspiring and empowering experience for the pupils, fostering a greater appreciation for the role of female scientists and their phenomenal achievements.

Breaking down language barriers…and a very exciting development in French!
Mill Hill recently hosted a visit from Collège Notre Dame de Grâce in Ardres, France. MHS pupils form Remove and the Fifth Form enjoyed breakfast and lunch with their French pen pals and attended lessons together, fully immersing themselves in speaking French for the day.
We are also extremely delighted, following some initial groundwork, to announce that we are hoping to relaunch our long-standing exchange program with the Institution Jean-Paul II in Rouen, which began nearly fifty years ago, next academic year.
The relaunch of this program will be warmly welcomed by parents and teachers alike, and means we will once again be able to offer our pupils an authentic language-learning experience in France in the Lower School. This will be a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to develop their independence, self-confidence, and cultural understanding. Keep an eye out for further details…
