- Mill Hill Schools Science Week 2025

Sweets, milk and bottle caps.
Not the first three things that spring to mind when you think about science. However, this Science Week, they were just some of the items used by pupils for their experiments.
Over the course of the week, pupils from across Mill Hill School, Belmont and Grimsdell came together to participate – or support – in various scientific activities. It was almost every day that the Mill Hill School labs were in use, welcoming pupils from Belmont or Grimsdell. Sometimes, it also included visitors from other Mill Hill Education Group schools, Keble and Lyonsdown.
Ms Trusha Patel, Science Coordinator at Grimsdell, said: “It has been an exciting time for our little learners. The joy they got of wearing their lab coats and interacting with older pupils at Mill Hill and Belmont has been stimulating. At this young stage, science learning is crucial, sparking curiosity and wonder about the world around them. By nurturing an early appreciation for science, we are cultivating the future leaders of innovation and exploration.”
It wasn’t just the labs that were busy, but also science teachers and scholars from Mill Hill School, who imparted their knowledge and love for the subject to our younger pupils in Grimsdell and Belmont.

Monday
Mill Hill School welcomed Year 5 pupils from Belmont and Lyonsdown for a day of experiments. Our Science Scholars were also in attendance, supporting the younger pupils and sharing their passion and enthusiasm.
In Chemistry, they conducted a Flame Test, exploring the vibrant colours of different elements. In Physics, they investigated the Centre of Mass with hands-on activities. In Biology, they took on the role of space scientists, testing Astronaut Urine!

Tuesday
Ms Kate Damberg, Head of Science and Biology at Mill Hill School, joined our Nursery pupils for a special science themed story time. Our Reception classes also had a blast creating mini lava lamps with the help of Science Scholars from Mill Hill! Using colour pens, water, a wooden stick, and paper, they explored the magic of mixing and reactions.

Wednesday
Year 6 Belmont pupils had their turn at Mill Hill School science labs and enjoyed different experiments to their Year 5 peers. In Chemistry, they experimented with making their own Lava Lamps, in Biology, they built DNA structures, and in Physics, they engineered paper bridges and explored fun mini physics equipment.
Belmont Science Teacher, Mr Stefan Iruthayanesan, commented: “Year 6 had an incredible time at Mill Hill, kicking off Science Week with a diverse range of hands-on scientific activities. Despite the rain, the enthusiasm never wavered; smiles and curiosity filled the air as Year 6 embraced the wonders of science!”

Thursday
It was time for Year 2 Grimsdell pupils to visit the Mill Hill Physics Department. There, they built their own racing cars using card, elastic bands, and bottle lids! In the afternoon, Year 1 had an exciting time in Chemistry, completing the fascinating Magic Milk Experiment.

Friday
On the final day of Science Week, Mill Hill School welcomed Year 6 pupils from Lyonsdown, Keble Prep and St Pauls. Their experiments included the Chemistry Flame Test, Physics Centre of Mass and, in Biology, testing astronaut urine.
Mr Adam Dusza, Acting Co-Head of Science, commented: "Science Week has been an incredible journey of discovery and inspiration! From the magic of homemade lava lamps to the thrill of engineering cars and bridges, we've shown that science isn't just about answers—it's about curiosity, creativity, and the joy of exploring the unknown. I hope these young minds leave our labs with a spark of wonder that will light their path to becoming the scientists, innovators, and problem solvers of tomorrow."
It has been a fantastic week for all those involved, with plenty of smiles, laughter and awe. We couldn’t have hoped for a more fun and successful 2025 Science Week.
